What is a logic grid puzzle?
The classic kind comes on paper: a short story, a list of written clues, and a grid where every item in one category meets every item in another. You mark an ✕ where a pairing is impossible and a dot where it must be true, and the grid fills up until each item has exactly one match. Einstein's riddle, also called the zebra puzzle, is the famous example.
The appeal is that nothing is luck. Every puzzle has one solution, and each clue you use rules out something, which makes the next clue useful. Solving one is a chain of small, certain steps.
The same puzzle, on the board
Hence keeps the logic and changes how it's drawn. Each row of the board is one category, such as monsters, hats or sweets, and each column is a position. Every square shows the pictures it could still hold, so the board is the grid: rule a picture out and it disappears from the square, and when one is left it's placed.
The clues are pictures too. How the tiles in a clue are laid out says what it means:
Stacked tiles share a column. The ghost and the crown are in the same column.
Side by side tiles are about position. The rocket and the sun are in neighboring columns.
A red ✕ turns a clue into its opposite. The cyclops is not in the top hat's column.
There's a quick 4x4 and a bigger 6x6 every day, the same for everyone, getting harder from Monday to Sunday. They're free in your browser on a phone or a computer, and you never have to guess.
